Spring Colours

Choose virtually any of our walking holidays this spring and you’ll be startled by the array of wild flowers lining the paths. In most Mediterranean regions, the displays are usually at their best between late March and mid-May, though you should wait until late June or even early July to travel to the Alps.

To make the most of this glorious time of year, we have several special flora-themed holidays, suitable not only for those with a keen interest in flowers, but also anyone who loves spring and wants to learn a little more about the flowers which add so much colour to the landscape.

The newest addition is our four-night Flowers of Alicante walking break. This unspoiled corner of south-eastern Spain boasts some of the most varied flora to be found anywhere in Europe, including the Long-headed Prickly Poppy, Downy Mercury and Woodcock Orchid. Your guide – and charming host at the Casa l’Ametler – is Brian Fagg, who will help you to identify the flowers and birds you come across (griffon vultures, nightingales and warblers are relatively common sights).

Another holiday on which you explore in the company of an English-speaking guide is in Switzerland’s Engadine Valley, where you stay at the delightful Hotel Meisser. The three guided walks serve as a good introduction to the flora of the valley floor and slopes, and there is the chance on one of your free days to explore the nearby Swiss National Park with its wealth of wildlife.

We also offer two completely self-guided holidays: one in Andalucia’s Grazalema Natural Park, whose rugged limestone peaks shelter a surprising variety of flora, and another in secret western Algarve, where golden broom and French lavender carpet the hills that slope down to the honey-coloured cliffs. We have found routes that reveal the very best of the flowers and, as well as providing a wealth of information in our walk notes, we also provide you with a CD and flower guide to help you with identification.

Cycling holidays in Bavaria   Walking holidays in the Pyrenees
Bavaria on two wheels
Our cycling holiday in Bavaria takes you along some beautiful, cycle-friendly routes, rewarding you with broad views framed by mountains, but a holiday here is just as much about lingering over a picnic on the shores of a lake and taking time to explore the whimsical castles and idyllic villages of frescoed houses that you pass.
  On top of the world
Whether you love the thrill of ascending to high peaks and passes, or the chance to see wildlife that ranges from bearded vultures to burnt orchids, the Pyrenees are hard to beat. At opposite ends of the chain, the Basque Pyrenees and Catalan Pyrenees are very different in terms of architecture, culture, language and cuisine.

City breaks in Porto   Walking holidays in Turkey
Springtime city breaks with a twist
It’s astonishing what you can pack into a long weekend. Our Porto & the Douro Valley break is typical of our city and walking breaks (see left-hand menu for more ideas), offering a wonderful blend of culture – Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – wine-tasting and scenic walks in the timeless scenery framing the Douro.
  Lycia: mountains, myths & monuments
Turkey’s long-distance Lycian Way is as much about the ancient world as walking: set against this impressive backdrop of turquoise seas and 2,000-metre-high limestone peaks are myriad ancient sites, including the vast city of Olympos, the astonishing castle at Simena, and the eternal flames of the mythical chimera.
